Why Americans Should
Elect George W. Bush

The endorsements for Governor George W. Bush continue to roll in from independent-thinking, moderate, and conservative quarters, amounting to a flood of the country’s most respected newspapers clamoring for a fresh start with Bush and Cheney. The Governor’s endorsements outnumber the Vice President’s over two to one, even garnering the nod from the major papers in the home states of Gore and Lieberman (Tennessee and Connecticut). Meanwhile, the endorsements for the Vice President from the very predictable liberal left-wing sound almost like apologies.

The links to the newspaper endorsements are listed alphabetically by state.

The Birmingham News
Birmingham, AL: “For those paying attention, the differences between the two candidates are stark, both on a personal and policy level. That’s why George W. Bush should be the next president of the United States.”

The Mobile Register
Mobile, AL: “The choice is clear: George W. Bush is the best man, with the best plans, for the U.S. presidency. He and Mr. Cheney will restore Americans’ pride in their political leaders, and will represent the United States with dignity, honor and wisdom.”

The Arizona Republic
Phoenix, AZ: “One of the most important issues in the presidential campaign is the fiscal direction that will be set for the country. While we are concerned about the unrestrained fiscal promises of both candidates, in general we believe that the nation will be better served by George W. Bush’s general tax cuts and willingness to reform Social Security and Medicare.”

The Arkansas Democrat Gazette
Little Rock, AR: “What we have noticed in George W. Bush is his independence, his tolerance, and his patience. He exhibits not just endurance, as his dogged opponent certainly does, but a capacity to grow in tolerance, in concentration, in perspective, and in office. He demonstrates again that good humor is transcendent and uniting. So is an honest simplicity. This candidate seems to have grown at almost every turn, while his opponent--an experienced politician of articulate beliefs and great skills--hasn’t. Al Gore is no longer as wooden, yet his ideas seem ever more so.”

The Benton County Sunday
Bentonville, AR: “(George) Washington’s strength was that he was able to bring the federalists and the state advocates to the table. What Bush has demonstrated in Texas is that he has the ability to work across the aisle and bring Democrats and Republicans together.”

KATV, Little Rock, Arkansas
“In an extremely rare policy shift in Arkansas, KATV, Channel 7, Little Rock, has endorsed a candidate in a political race -- Gov. George W. Bush of Texas for the presidency. The station’s president and general manager, Dale Nicholson, announced the endorsement in a brief telecast Wednesday night, saying the Republican ticket of Bush and former Defense Secretary Richard Cheney offer leadership that America needs.”

Billy Graham near-Endorsement
“Mr. Graham, appearing frail but speaking with emphasis, said Tuesday’s vote is ‘a critical election in the history of America.’ “We have in our state absentee voting — I’ve already voted,’ said Mr. Graham, a resident of North Carolina. ‘I’ll just let you guess who I voted for. And my family the same way. And we believe there’s going to be a tremendous victory and change by Tuesday night in the direction of the country — putting it in good hands. I believe in the integrity of this man. I’ve known him as a boy, I’ve known him as a young man. And we’re very proud of him.’”

The Contra Costa Times
Walnut Creek, CA: “But we believe Bush’s philosophical preference for market-based solutions, individual choice and decentralized government control is best suited to serve the American people, who should elect him president on Nov. 7.”

The Los Angeles Daily News
Los Angeles, CA: “Bush has shown on the campaign trail that he learns fast, that he surrounds himself with experienced men and women, and to borrow a phrase from someone else, that he is his own man. It seems that the country is ready for and would benefit from a change -- a fresh face for a new century. The Daily News endorses Republican George W. Bush for president and recommends voting for him on Nov. 7.”

The North County Times
Escondido, CA: “As the presidential debates revealed, Gore may have a better grasp of policy details, but Gov. Bush has a better grasp of principles. Bush has staked his claim as a bipartisan leader, which the country could certainly use today. Though we do not agree with every point of his platform, its general tenor and sweep are the right way for the country to go.”

The Oakland Tribune
Oakland, CA: “We view Bush as better able to make decisions, negotiate, remain calm and lead the nation. His ability to pick the right people for key positions was illustrated by his selection of former defense secretary Cheney and reinforced by expectations that retired Army Gen. Colin Powell and U.S. Sen. John McCain, Bush’s chief challenger in primaries, may accept significant roles in a Bush administration.”

The San Diego Union Tribune
San Diego, CA: “Because we believe he displays the steady leadership and strength of character needed to transcend the partisan rancor that grips Washington, George W. Bush is our choice for president.”

The Ventura County Star
Ventura, CA: “On the stump, Bush has delivered a persuasive message of empowering people to make more of their own choices. He comes across as commonsensical, as a decent man who cares about others and as a welcome change from a president who has done a disservice to the nation with his poll-driven policies, constant lies and scandalous conduct.”

The Alameda Times Star
Chico Enterprise Record
Eureka Times Standard
The Hayward Daily Review
The Pasadena Star News
Redding Record
The San Gabriel Valley News
The San Mateo County Times
The Stockton Record
The Tri Valley Herald

The Rocky Mountain News
Denver, CO: “George W. Bush has a practical, principled view that the federal government’s role in American life should be restrained. He wants Washington to help raise up the poorest among us and to solve such problems as guaranteeing the future of Social Security. But through the device of tax cuts, he also wants to further liberate the American people and to make government less like a shadow that follows everyone everywhere. That sense of limits is among the primary reasons the Texas governor should be elected president of the United States.”

Other Colorado newspapers that have endorsed George W. Bush for president:
The Greeley Tribune

The Hartford Courant
Hartford, CT: “In some key areas, we are not better off today than in 1992. The health-care system is aching. Social Security’s long term viability has yet to be ensured. The quality of elementary and secondary education leaves much to be desired ... If America has a coherent energy policy, it’s a well-kept secret. All of these failings cannot credibly be traced solely to the Republican-dominated Congress. ... At the beginning of the 21st century, America needs a fresh start, and Governor George W. Bush is more likely to provide that than Vice President Al Gore.”

The New Haven Register
New Haven, CT: “If the presidential ticket was Bush-Lieberman or Lieberman-Gore, our endorsement would be simple. The opportunity to put a skilled, likeable politician with the proven independence and integrity of Joseph I. Lieberman in the White House would be impossible for the Register, the senator’s home town newspaper, to ignore. But in truth, the top of ticket determines the choice. ... As a result, we endorse Bush, who has shown greater policy vision, a willingness to experiment with government, and a belief that individuals deserve a greater say in controlling their income and making important choices for their retirement and health care.”

Other Connecticut newspapers that have endorsed George W. Bush for president:
Stamford Advocate
The Waterbury Republican American

The Washington Times
Washington DC: “Texas Gov. George W. Bush far surpasses Vice President Al Gore whether the qualifications are measured in terms of political priorities, leadership, personal character, governmental philosophies or vision of the future.”

The Naples Daily News
Naples, FL: “America’s chief organizing principles - which entail taking care of nature - were clearly stated in the Declaration of Independence. They are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. It is because Bush’s ideas reflect these principles so much better than Gore’s that Bush deserves victory on Nov. 7.”

The Orlando Sentinel
Orlando, FL: “The nation needs a leader who can bring people together, who can stand firm on principle but knows the art of compromise. America needs a president who is willing to serve as a role model for all its citizens. The Orlando Sentinel trusts Texas Gov. George W. Bush to take on those weighty responsibilities.”

The Tampa Tribune
Tampa Bay, FL: “What the American people need in the White House is a moderate man of mainstream convictions, a man both strong and humble, who will release us from the ugliness and embarrassments of the past eight years. We believe George W. Bush is that man.”

Other Florida newspapers that have endorsed George W. Bush for president:
The Bradenton Herald
The Lakeland Ledger
The Stuart News

The Atlanta Journal
Atlanta, GA: “At the level of program details, it is clear that Bush has the better ideas. Bush knows that real answers and real innovations come from the bottom up, from letting citizens, cities and states keep their right to govern themselves as much as possible and to try whatever they think might produce better lives and a better society.” (Published Thursday, October 19, 2000; Journal articles stay active for seven days, and are then archived; after Thursday, October 26, 2000, this link may become inactive.)

The Chicago Sun-Times
Chicago, IL: “Throughout the campaign, George W. Bush has sounded a conciliatory tone, avoiding the ugly culture wars of recent years and promising to work across party lines for unity. His election would mean a clean slate in Washington.”

The Chicago Tribune
Chicago, IL: “This is an election about honesty, about restoring bipartisanship, about fostering government that will nurture a booming economy without getting in the way of American ingenuity. There is one candidate for president who will do all that, and it is George W. Bush.”

The State Journal-Register
Springfield, IL: “Because we believe he displays the steady leadership and strength of character needed to transcend the partisan rancor that grips Washington, George W. Bush is our choice for president.”

The Arlington Heights Daily Herald
The Bloomington Pantagraph
Decatur Herald and Review
The Peoria Journal Star
The Rockford Register Star

The Indianapolis Star News
Indianapolis, IN: “The question each voter must decide is: Which candidate offers the more compelling vision for the future? On that basis, The Star endorses George W. Bush for president. He offers the sounder vision for the nation, and especially Indiana with its economy so dependent on affordable energy.”

Other Indiana newspapers that have endorsed George W. Bush for president:
The Fort Wayne News Sentinel

International Brotherhood of Police Officers
“Texas Governor George W. Bush was endorsed today by the International Brotherhood of Police Officers (IBPO). The union, representing 25,000 police officers, endorsed Clinton-Gore in 1992 and 1996. This is the fourth major law enforcement endorsement group to endorse Governor Bush, including the National Troopers Coalition (NTC), Law Enforcement Alliance of America (LEAA), and the Fraternal Order of Police (FOP). Notably, the FOP like the IBPO, endorsed Clinton-Gore in 1996.”

The Jewish Press
“However, we do believe that on certain core Jewish concerns there really are discernible distinctions to be drawn. With that in mind, our choice for president this year is George W. Bush.”

The Wichita Eagle
Wichita, KS: “We stand on this election threshold wanting more, craving a leader who believes in our strengths as individuals and as a nation. George W. Bush offers that hope, as well as the temperament and integrity to earn -- and maintain -- our trust.”

The Owensboro Messenger Inquirer
Owensboro, KY: “At the end of the day, what swayed us to Bush was his leadership record. The true test of a leader is not just in doing what he proposes in a campaign, but in how he reacts to unforeseen issues that arise. The next president will need the ability to work with a narrowly divided Congress, and in the wake of a presidential impeachment that broke nearly exactly along party lines in the House, that will take an ability to reach concensus on both sides of the political aisle.”

Other Kentucky newspapers that have endorsed George W. Bush for president:
The Bowling Green Daily News

Leading Economists and Nobel Laureates
“Support in the economic field continues to grow for Governor Bush’s plan as an additional one hundred leading economists endorsed Governor Bush’s economic plan. A Bush ad released September 6 in USA Today highlighted 300 leading economists and Nobel Laureates who cited Governor Bush’s plan as “better for working families and continued prosperity.” As of today, that number has risen to 503.”

The New Orleans Times-Picayune
New Orleans, LA: “The Republican Texas governor seems to have that intangible quality so important to the presidency - the ability to lead, to connect with people, to draw disparate groups together. Inclusion is a tired word these days but it best describes the approach that Mr. Bush has taken to governing in Texas and holds promise for a Bush White House.”

The Bangor Daily News
Bangor, ME: “Maine voters need only to look at the current record-setting stalemate over the budget in Washington to conclude that the current climate in the nation’s capital must be changed. This chronic impasse and the inability of government to function above partisan bickering demand a leader who values honesty and cooperation, one who can pull the nation together with a positive vision. That person is George W. Bush.”

The Boston Herald
Boston, MA: “George W. Bush has spent these months proving he is up to the job of leading this nation. But he has done more than that. He has proven he can lead it on new paths. For that reason above all else the Boston Herald is pleased to endorse his candidacy for president.”

The Lowell Sun
Lowell, MA: “If you’re fed up with the lying and the slick cynicism and the utter lack of respect for our intelligence and ideals, Texas Gov. George W. Bush is the perfect antidote.”

Detroit, MI: “We believe Michigan will be better equipped to meet the challenges of a global marketplace if Mr. Bush, the Republican, wins the Oval Office. For that reason and many others, we endorse George W. Bush for president.”

The Flint Journal
Flint, MI: “Bush has an ability to connect with people, which is an indispensable quality for any leader. He has the strength of character and self assurance to surround himself with good help, such as running mate Dick Cheney and likely Cabinet member Colin Powell. As his campaign has progressed from the early primary days and through the debates, his performance has gotten stronger. For these and other reasons, The Journal believes George W. Bush is the better choice to be the nation’s 43rd president.”

The Grand Rapids Press
Grand Rapids, MI: “For the nation, and particularly for Michigan, the wiser and more hopeful choice in next week’s presidential election is Texas Gov. GEORGE W. BUSH. His record in Texas convinces us that on many difficult and divisive questions, he offers the best chance for finding common ground for the country.”

Other Michigan newspapers that have endorsed George W. Bush for president:
Kalamazoo Gazette

The St. Paul Pioneer Press
St. Paul, MN: “Gov. George W. Bush of Texas has made a convincing case that he would bring fresh, beyond-the-Beltway pragmatism to the challenges facing American government. He should be elected the nation’s next president.”

The Billings Gazette
Billings, MT: “Bush projects sincerity. ... He has The Billings Gazette’s support in his bid for the presidency.”

The National Association of Wholesaler-Distributers
“Governor Bush has been a businessman and he knows firsthand how numerous government regulations can sometimes undermine business growth. His agenda to cut the marginal tax rate, eliminate the death tax, and bring about common sense tort reform will accelerate economic growth,” said NAW’s President Dirk Van Dongen.”

The National Review
“We hope that November 7 will end the reign of Clinton/Gore, and bring on a better, cleaner politics under George W. Bush.”

The Las Vegas Review Journal

The Union Leader
Manchester, NH: “Gone are the days when this page dismissed George W. Bush because his tax cut ideas, education plans, and entitlement reforms were not as aggressive as those of Steve Forbes. The ideas Bush laid out Friday at St. Anselm are so far superior to Al Gore’s that we are ready to warmly embrace the candidate who worried us so much in February.”

The Trentonian
Trenton, NJ: “A vote based on the merits - taking into account the two candidates’ personalities and their stands on the issues - will, we believe, bring you to the same conclusion: Gov. George W. Bush is the candidate better suited - and better suited by far - to take a seat behind that all-important desk in the oval office.”/font>

Other New Jersey newspapers that have endorsed George W. Bush for president:
The Camden Courier Post
The Asbury Park Press

The Albuquerque Journal
Albuquerque, NM: “There are other positions on which the Journal disagrees with Bush, but this is a campaign for president, not king. And a president must work with Congress, a decisive factor in supporting Bush. The record in Texas is not his alone, but that of an executive branch able to work productively with a bipartisan legislative branch rather than accepting gridlock as the price of partisan primacy. Matters of policy aside, the decision to support Bush is clinched by the man -- steady, consistent, dependable. The Journal urges voters to call for change in Washington.”

The Las Cruces Sun-News
Las Cruces, NM: “George W. Bush would be the best president to push for policies that let individuals and families - not government - decide how to spend their money. His proposal calls for across-the-board cuts in tax rates, benefiting all Americans who pay taxes, not just targeted categories of Americans as called for in the Gore tax plan. It is also important to keep in mind that New Mexico is a western state, and Bush, from Texas, and his vice presidential running mate, Dick Cheney of Wyoming, have a much better understanding of issues important to the West.”

The New York Post
New York City, NY: “Americans need a president they can trust. Just as Americans need a president who will trust them - to make the right decisions for themselves on the issues that really count.”

The Syracuse Herald-Journal
Syracuse, NY: “Voters will choose a president this year against a much happier background than they did a generation ago. They want to elect a candidate whose policies are likely to maintain the good times. In our view, that candidate is the Republican, Texas Gov. George W. Bush.”

The Wall Street Journal
New York City, NY: “Al Gore has run a campaign, filled with enemies, that is perfectly suited to the party and politics Bill Clinton left for him. And Al Gore has left it to George Bush to run on everything that’s left. It is quite a lot. As an idea, Mr. Bush’s politics, which he chose to call compassionate conservatism, has at least attempted to fashion a political bridge to the foreseeable future. It is a bridge that allows thoughtful liberals to believe, or hope, that the best qualities of their legacy will find a place in a world that is obviously going to be run less by governments and more by individuals making their own choices. It’s a politics that admits the world has changed. Whatever else we may wish for in a potential Presidency, the person seeking it ought to reflect, in his words and his ideas, that he is enough his own man to be able to embrace this basic reality.”

The Winston-Salem Journal
Winston-Salem, NC: “It’s unlikely that either would earn the mantle of greatness, but Bush will represent the United States and its interests better. He’s a nicer guy, and he will surround himself with smarter people than Gore would. That may be because Bush will need more advice than Gore, but if he gets it and follows where it leads, the country will prosper.”

Other North Carolina newspapers that have endorsed George W. Bush for president:
The High Point Enterprise

The Cincinnati Enquirer
Cincinnati, OH: “The tired old class-warfare bashing of “big business” sounds silly - not because we are not compassionate, but because we understand that without business there would be no resources to help others. For this region, Mr. Bush is the right fit. He’s a moderate conservative who has found a theme that is in harmony with our lives: empowerment of the individual, not government.”

The Cincinnati Post
Cincinnati, OH: “Bush’s lack of time in Washington may actually be an asset. Unlike his opponent, much of his adult life was spent in business, but that is not a demerit; it is a politically important education in everyday realities.”

The Cleveland Plain Dealer
Cleveland, OH: “George W. Bush should be the next president of the United States. ... because, among his many other skills, Bush possesses a quality his opponent, Al Gore, cannot claim: authenticity.”

The Canton Repository
The Findlay Courier
The Warren Tribune Chronicle
The Youngstown Vindicator

The Daily Oklahoman
Oklahoma City, OK: “America must have a person who is honest, has a vision for our place in the world and understands the proper role of government in aiding the prosperity of this great land. We must have a president who will do more than mirror the popular culture and divine direction from the winds of public opinion. America must have a leader. By this measure, as well as his positions on the major issues facing the country, Texas Gov. George W. Bush is the best choice for president of the United States.”

The Tulsa World
Tulsa, OK: “On this basis, the Tulsa World is convinced that Gov. George W. Bush is the best candidate for president. This is due in no small part to Bush’s record as governor of the second largest state in the union.”

The Portland Oregonian
Portland, OR: “The Texas governor has demonstrated during the campaign that he has the talent to lead the nation.”

Other Oregon newspapers that have endorsed George W. Bush for president:
The Albany Democrat-Herald

Bush has demonstrated the ability to bring Democrats and Republicans together to get the public’s business done. For his political courage and ability to lead, The Morning Call recommends the election of Republican George W. Bush.”

The Erie Times-News
Erie, PA: “The choice for us is clear-cut: The Erie Times-News endorses George W. Bush for President of the United States. We do so because Washington desperately needs the change in tone Bush promises to provide. We do so because the Texas governor vows to interject a bipartisan tenor to the White House. We do so because the conditions of the day demand a candidate willing to restore civility and integrity to the presidency.”

The Scranton Times-Tribune
Scranton, PA: “The policy differences are real and deep, however. On balance, they warrant a vote for Mr. Bush.”

Other Pennsylvania newspapers that have endorsed George W. Bush for president:
Altoona Mirror
Harrisburg Patriot News
The Johnston Tribune-Democrat
Pittsburgh Tribune Review

Reform Party’s Ross Perot
“Governor George Bush, based on his record in Texas -- here is a man that I have never heard anybody criticize once for improper conduct as governor, for improper taking of political funds, for payoffs, for impropriety in the governor’s mansion or at any time. And that is a big state. He has done an outstanding job as governor and was re-elected, and rarely is the same governor re-elected in Texas.”

The Providence Journal
Providence, RI: “Since Ronald Reagan resuscitated the entrepreneurial spirit in America nearly two decades ago, the United States has enjoyed a virtually unbroken, and unprecedented, prosperity. And the nation is at peace. But the world may well have grown more, rather than less, dangerous in recent years , even as we worry about preserving the economic progress of the past two decades. The end of the Cold War did not erase America’s global responsibilities, and the good times cannot last forever. Who is more likely to strengthen America’s national security, and broaden our prosperity to benefit all Americans? Gov. George W. Bush of Texas.”

The State
Columbia, SC: “Gov. Bush never sought public office until he was a mature adult. But he has performed well since entering that arena. And when the words and actions of both candidates are added up, it is our judgment that Mr. Bush would prove to be the better president.”

The Knoxville Sentinel
Knoxville, TN: “In this campaign, Bush has met his challenges. His acceptance speech at the Republican National Convention was eloquent, a call for a free people to put aside racial divisions and work together to surround the nation’s least advantaged with unparalleled opportunities.”

The Chattanooga Free Press
Chattanooga, TN: “We need a man of honor, integrity, principle, ability, stability and devotion to the Constitution.”

The Memphis Commercial Appeal
Memphis, TN: “But Bush’s lack of time in Washington may actually be an asset. Unlike his opponent, much of his adult life was spent in business, but that is not a demerit; it is a politically important education in everyday realities. As governor of Texas, he has made a positive difference in many vital areas of state life. Statistics demonstrate as much, even including statistics from the Clinton-Gore administration. The reason for his success appears to be a likable, balanced leadership style that has enabled him to find common ground with Democratic legislators. It could also help him deal effectively with members of Congress and foreign heads of state.”

The Dallas Morning News
Dallas, TX: “We strongly believe that Texas Gov. George W. Bush should become the nation’s first president of a new century. We base our decision upon three crucial points ...”

The El Paso Times

The Seattle Times
Seattle, WA: “On two large themes, Bush has emerged as the superior candidate. Much about him is unknown and much about him remains untested in national office. But in the end, this was not a decision based on offices held or promises made, it was about the qualities Americans need and deserve in those who hold public trust.”

The Vancouver Columbian
Vancouver, WA: “Gore has never met a problem that his government cannot fix. Bush envisions a more appropriate role. From education to Social Security, Bush would keep government on a leash. Gore would build a bigger dog house.”

Other Washington newspapers that have endorsed George W. Bush for president:
The Spokane Spokesman-Review
The Tri-City Herald

The Charleston Daily Mail
Charleston, WV: “It’s the difference between government that knows it all and mistrusts the American people, and government that respects Americans and gives them credit for being able to manage their own affairs. It’s the difference between a guy who comes up with the Kyoto Protocol and a guy who bothers to find out that most of the nation depends on coal production to keep the lights on. It’s the difference between judges who want to write law and judges who respect legislative bodies. It’s the difference between growth in government and growth in household income. ... George W. Bush, and the team he would put into place, represent the best hope for facing longstanding problems and building a better future.”

The Green Bay Press Gazette
Green Bay, WI: “Perhaps the best we can say about George W. Bush is that he is not Al Gore. But that’s saying a lot. We need fresh leadership in the White House and a bipartisan approach to this nation’s problems. Vote for George W. Bush and Dick Cheney on Nov. 7.”
