Overview of the Grammar Stage

This article by Christine Miller is really a compilation and condensation of the thought and discussions, taking place over a year’s time, of the on-line Classical Education Support Loop for homeschooling mothers. If you are still a bit fuzzy about the particulars of the Grammar stage of the trivium, this is the place to begin.

Subjects in the Grammar Stage

The subject of Grammar is the heart of the grammar stage curriculum, and throughout most of the history of classical education, meant Latin and Greek grammar. Besides the articles on Grammar and Language (meaning classical languages, Latin and Greek), there are also detailed articles about other subjects that could be included in the grammar stage of a Classical Christian Education: Art, Bible, Geography, History, Literature, Math, Music, Oratory, Science, and Writing. This is where the rubber meets the road, where classical educational theory is taken out of its ivory tower and put into practice at the dining room tables of homeschooling families day in and day out. The methods and ideas discussed in these articles are merely the personal opinion, based on research and experience, of the authors. Readers are encouraged to take from these ideas where they can, and discard those that are incompatible with their principle and practice.

Preparing Younger Children for a Great Books Education

by Wes Callihan of Schola Classical Tutorials and co-author of Classical Education & the Home School. Mr. Callihan’s essay includes his unique perspective as an experienced Great Books and Literature instructor at both the secondary and university levels, and also as a homeschooling father of six. Besides an important overview of the goals we must keep in mind while educating our children classically, he has also incorporated recommendations for approaching specific subjects in the grammar stage. A must-read for anyone educating according to the classical model.
