History on the Internet

This page is still under construction. In the meantime, you may find the following sites helpful:

Europe: the Renaissance Timeline
From the invention of the printing press in 1448 to the publication of Luther’s Ninety-Five Theses in 1517 and the death of Leonardo da Vinci in 1519, this beautiful timeline hits all the high points of the Italian Renaissance.

Italian Renaissance
An impressive page on the Italian Renaissance, not too over-powering, but just right, with some fabulous links to individual pages on the great painters. This page is from the Modern European History AP site, via the Links to the Past page.

Northern Renaissance
“The ideas of the Italian Renaissance gradually spread northward across the Alps to the rest of Western Europe. The Northern Renaissance differed from the Italian Renaissance in that the most brilliant achievements were those of writers rather than, as in Italy, those of painters and sculptors.” Another fantastic Modern European History AP site.

Renaissance
Part of the Western Canon great books site, with emphasis on the great writers and books of the Renaissance and Reformation, plus links to other sites of interest.

Virtual Renaissance
This school site contains everything you ever wanted to know about the Renaissance, both Italian and Northern, and presents that information in a fun and interesting way. A junior high school site, and a model for what school sites can be.

While the main page of this site deals exclusively with 16th century English Literature, this background information page on the Renaissance time period is excellent, and has many links to must-see internet sites about the Renaissance throughout Europe.
