Christine Miller

For 1st-6th grades. All Through the Ages is an exhaustive guide to over 3000 of the best in quality “living books” and literature, arranged by historical era and geographical region. The geographical regions section is divided into 27 separate regions, such as Africa, the Arctic and Antarctic, China, France and Belgium, etc. Each of the 27 regional sections is further subdivided into reading levels: 1-3 for beginning readers, 4-6 for fluent readers, 7-9 for maturing readers, and 10-12 for college-bound or adult readers. Although in the formal curriculum, we teach geographic awareness through literature in grades 1-6 in the grammar stage, All Through the Ages can be used to provide excellent reading material in grades 1-12 and beyond. Besides teaching geography through literature, the guide can be used to teach history through literature, both world and American, and includes a history of the sciences, mathematics, and arts section, and a separate section listing the great books of Western Civilization and the Christian tradition, covering the history of the Great Discussion, Literature, Poetry, and Drama.

Child’s Geography of the WorldA Child’s Geography of the World
V. M. Hillyer

For 2nd-4th grades. Excellent read-aloud material for early grammar stage children, or for mid- to later grammar stage children to read independently. Full of interesting narratives of people and places, this book was written by the late V. M. Hillyer, headmaster of the Calvert School of Baltimore. Having himself visited most of the countries in the world, he is able to present with special intimacy the lands that lie beyond the horizon “from Kalamazoo to Timbuktu.” This book gives children an interest and knowledge of the world around them which will reward them all through life.

van Loon’s Geography van Loon’s Geography
Hendrik Willem van Loon

For 4th-6th grades. For later grammar stage students. Van Loon, who won the very first Newbery Award ever given for his Story of Mankind, proceeds with a different sort of geography. With chapter headings such as “Maps: A very brief chapter upon a very big and fascinating subject, together with a few observations on the way people slowly learned how to find their way on this planet of ours,” and “Of the discovery of Europe and the sort of people who live in that part of the world,” and “Korea, Mongolia, and Manchuria, if the latter still exists when this book is published,” this book is a treasure of fascinating narratives told in a way that sticks with you. van Loon’s books inspired Hillyer to write his.
