Maps & Map Skills: Grades 3-6

The understanding of how the three-dimensional world is represented on two-dimensional paper dawns more slowly for our children. These suggestions will provide the necessary exposure and practice over the course of the final four years of the grammar stage.

Joan Sweeney and Annette Cable

For the 2nd-3rd grades. “A small girl introduces the concept of maps, beginning in her own room, then reaching further out to her house, street, town, state (Kansas), country, and the globe, and back again, step by step, to herself at home. The illustrations are executed in colored pencil with occasional watercolor and airbrush. They play with scale and perspective and help children expand their personal address.” -- Booklist, The Horn Book. A great introduction to a child’s familiar three-dimensional world represented in two-dimensions.

Click to order Maps and Globes Maps and Globes
Jack Knowlton and Harriet Barton

For the 3rd grade. This is a very brief introduction to the history of maps, the difference between maps and globes, the language of maps (such as direction, for example), the equator and hemispheres, scales of miles, longitude and latitude, how maps show elevation, and different kinds of maps. A nice introduction to the topic for the 3rd grade. My only gripe with this book is that it continues the myth that ancient civilizations (with a clear drawing of Ptolemy’s map) believed that the earth was flat! Use How We Learned the Earth Was Round in the History of Geographic Exploration section to set the record straight. Other than that, this is a very useful book.

Click to order Geography from A to Z Geography from A to Z: A Picture Glossary
Jack Knowlton and Harriet Barton

For the 3rd grade. Sixty-two words, from ‘archipelago’ to ‘zone,’ with brief, clear definitions amplified in large, full-color illustrations and maps. This is an attractive introduction to the unique vocabulary of geography. The perfect book to follow Knowlton’s Maps and Globes and to introduce map and geographical terminology.

Click to order Discovering Maps Discovering Maps
Alma Graham and Robert Thomas

For the 4th-6th grades. This book is the next step in map skills after Knowlton’s Maps and Globes and Geography from A to Z. Blessed with an easy-to-follow format, the book logically progresses through all the basic map concepts such as scale, distance, direction, etc. Maps of each continent and geographical region are included. The book concludes with geological trivia of the names and locations of the coldest, warmest, driest, wettest, highest, and lowest places in the world. The text asks questions for children to answer, which parents can use to review and ensure a child’s understanding. (The answer key is included.)

Click to order The Geography Coloring Book The Geography Coloring Book
Wynn Kapit

For the 5th or 6th grades; or secondary students that haven’t studied geography. This newly revised edition of the Geography Coloring Book is an excellent tool to introduce specific regions to children following Discovering Maps. Each hemisphere, continent, and country is represented in surprising detail with directions for coloring. Geographical terms (delta, peninsula, etc.) are explained and defined. The author writes of her revision, “In the second edition I have added the new countries of the former Soviet Union and Yugoslavia, as well as sections on seven historic land empires (shown over modern maps); flags of the world (shown in the context of their nations of origin; and an index that is also dictionary and quiz.”
