In this case, the movie Serenity is hanging on grimly by its toenails at the box office. Well, hanging on grimly in the face of certain disaster fits Serenity. Update: Christian Spotlight gives Serenity a 3 star offensive rating, for violence, minor language, and minor [s-x]ual references, but did note the positive moral message in the review. Some of the readers of the site agreed, some disagreed.
