Grammar Stage Art: Grades 1-6

Option 1: Art History, Copying Masterpieces, and Color Mixing
This is the option described in Christine Miller’s Art in the Grammar Stage article. It requires a little more on the part of the teacher, but provides a thorough, rewarding, and rich education in the art of Western Civilization for grammar stage students.

Option 2: Barry Stebbing’s Sequential Art Curriculum
Rather than following the option described in Art in the Grammar Stage, a parent could use a sequential art curriculum. Barry Stebbing’s Biblically based curriculum provides a basic foundation while avoiding the twaddle of just making crafts.

Option 3: Artistic Pursuits’ Sequential Art Curriculum
The difference between this sequential curriculum and Barry Stebbing’s is: this one is for 4th - 6th graders, while Mr. Stebbing’s program covers the entire grammar stage; this one approaches art secularly rather than Biblically as Mr. Stebbing’s does; and this one clearly and sequentially teaches the foundational elements of drawing, color, and composition - the grammar of art - which Mr. Stebbing’s alludes to without being as clear and direct.


Option 1: Art History, Copying Masterpieces, and Color Mixing

Color Mixing:

A Color Sampler

The best way to learn color mixing is just by doing it. Needed materials are true red, yellow, blue, white, and black watercolor paints, an artist’s palette, brushes, and scads of heavy paper, available at local art supply stores. However, this wonderful book gives the foundation for color mixing in a simple and beautifully elegant way. It introduces and illustrates the concepts of primary, secondary, and intermediate colors, the color wheel, warm and cool colors, white, black, and gray, shade and hue, and complementary colors. The text and illustrations are easy to understand without being babyish.

Option 2: Barry Stebbing’s Sequential Art Curriculum

Baby Lamb’s Book of Art

It also includes cut and paste practice for fine motor development and coordination, and other fun and educational projects for preschoolers. For ages 3 to 5.


I Can Do All Things

More than just a coloring or craft book, this art book for kindergarteners and first graders is a complete sequential art curriculum: an art text and sketchbook in one. With the help of I Can Do All Things, a child can learn to draw, paint, use colored pencils and markers, plus learn beginning color theory, all while practicing his fine motor skills. The text includes art appreciation lessons, a glossary, examinations, and paint cards. This text can be used independently of Baby Lamb’s Book of Art. Ages 5 and up.

The 70 lessons can be completed in one year doing art one or two days a week, or in one semester doing art 3 or more days a week. The lessons include instruction and practice in art theory, drawing, perspective, nature studies, anatomy, portraits, cartooning, lettering, creative writing and more. First and second graders will need a little more parental assistance (in reading the lessons, for example); otherwise, for ages 8 to 13.

Feed My Sheep

The 200 lessons can be completed in one year doing art daily, or in two or more years doing art one, two or three days a week. The lessons include color theory, drawing, nature studies, perspective, anatomy, portraits, cartooning, penmanship, academia, art appreciation, and more. Barry Stebbing’s art books are full of inspirational quotes from the Bible and famous artists on topics of art, wisdom, and beauty that children can even include in their copybook. For ages 8 to 13.

Option 3: Artistic Pursuits’ Sequential Art Curriculum

Elements of Art and Composition

Click to order Elements of Art and Composition Grades 4-6 Artistic Pursuits is a new curriculum written by a husband-wife team, both working artists, who are also homeschooling parents. Their curriculum has been specifically written with homeschoolers in mind, and manages to avoid the twaddle of so many other so-called “art programs” that just provide mindless crafts. The Artistic Pursuits program provides exercises in observation and teaches the elements of art, color, and composition using the great masters. Thus it begins with the building blocks, the tools used by all artists to create art, and proceeds sequentially. Each text comes with 16 lessons, each lesson utilizing several projects to teach the principles involved. The explanations are clear and simple to understand, and the reproduction prints used with each text are included. Unlike Barry Stebbing’s curriculum, the art concepts are taught from a secular viewpoint. The elementary curriculum uses American art masterworks.
