Dialectic Stage Literature: Grades 7-9

Option 1: CCH’s Literature of Western Civilization Units
This option continues to build on the foundation laid in the grammar stage with CCH’s Literature of Western Civilization Units. It is designed to continue to develop our children’s reading ability and skills to enable them to read the Great Books of Western Civilization beginning in the rhetoric stage.

Option 2: First Two Years of a Five Year Great Books Course
Great Books courses provide an education in the history, literature, and philosophy of Western Civilization rolled into one class, the Great Books Courses, beginning in the 8th grade. While a parent using this option will not follow the precise scope and sequence outlined at CCH for the secondary stages, a child will nevertheless receive an excellent classical education. For 7th grade literature, a parent may choose from the suggestions offered in CCH’s 7th-9th grade literature units.

Option 3: First Year of a Four Year Great Books Course
Great Books courses provide an education in the history, literature, and philosophy of Western Civilization rolled into one class, the Great Books Courses, beginning in the 9th grade. While a parent using this option will not follow the precise scope and sequence outlined at CCH for the secondary stages, a child will nevertheless receive an excellent classical education. For 7th and 8th grade literature, a parent may choose from the suggestions offered in CCH’s 7th-9th grade literature units.

Option 1: CCH’s Literature of Western Civilization Units

In the dialectic stage, our children will again go through the literature of Western Civilization as they have in the grammar stage, only at a deeper and more advanced reading level, to prepare them for the Great Books of Western Civilization they will be reading in the rhetoric stage. In their dialectic stage literature study, they will compare the protagonists they meet with Biblical absolutes. This option was designed to build on CCH’s literature units for the grammar stage, and a child should have that preparation as a prerequisite. This option will also require CCH’s dialectic stage writing curriculum to teach the student argumentative and critical writing.

Smarr Publishers World, English, and American Literature
Robert W. Watson

Click to go to Smarr Publishers’ Classical Literature Courses Robert Watson says of the genesis of his excellent literature program: “Years ago, as a literature teacher, I felt that the typical Christian high school English curriculum suffered from two deficiencies: a lack of critical writing and a lack of sufficient readings from the classics. Our company’s mission is simple: provide educators and students with an interesting program so that students will write with enthusiasm and read for pleasure. Our Great Books Curriculum helps students to understand their readings, to build their vocabulary, and to express their thoughts in a logical, systematic way.” Their program focuses not on the philosophical works as ETS’ and Schola’s do, but on “great books that reach the soul.” The Literature Courses come with writing instruction and writing exercises, so a separate writing curriculum is not necessary with this option.
8th grade: Introduction to Literature
9th grade: World and Romantic Literature

World, English, & American Literature Critical Thinking Courses
James P. Stobaugh

Click to to e-mail Dr. Stobaugh for further information These Literature Critical Thinking Courses by Dr. James Stobaugh of For Such a Time as This Ministries are meant to be used by Christian students beginning in the 8th grade. The courses have been designed to simutaneously prepare the students for the SAT and college, and to live in these perilous modern times by developing their thinking skills while they fulfill their language arts requirements. These courses also integrate writing assignments with the literature study. They do not study the history and philosophy of Western Civilization as the Great Books Tutorials do, but provide an in-depth Christian education of the great literature of Western Civilization.
