Medieval Knights on Horseback Research and Information Links

This page contains links to research sites and sites specializing in finding information. Some excellent online encyclopedias and internet directories are also represented.

555-1212 Information
Search both white and yellow pages, government listings, do reverse lookup, find toll-free numbers, area codes, addresses, zip codes, and other useful information.

About.com
About.com used to be the Mining Co. I like this site because real people search for and review websites on an enormous variety of topics, and often you can find the information you’re looking for on the internet without having to wade through 50,000 returns from a search engine.

AnyWho
The phone directories of all fifty states are maintained here in a searchable format; also search for zip codes and other useful information.

Ask Jeeves!
“Ask Jeeves is a unique question-answering system that allows users to ask questions in plain English, then delivers the answer. As one of the most sophisticated navigation systems on the Internet, Ask Jeeves combines a unique natural language engine with a proprietary knowledgebase. Taken together, this mechanism processes the meaning and grammar of real questions in plain English; provides intelligent responses for user confirmation; links directly to relevant, high-quality answers [on the internet]; and, perhaps most exciting of all, gets smarter over time, as its knowledgebase expands with each question asked and each answer delivered.”

Britannica.com
Contains the website directory of reviewed and rated sites by the editors of Encyclopedia Britannica, plus online magazines and books, the complete Encyclopedia Britannica online (now free of charge!) and the Merriam Webster Collegiate Dictionary.

Compton’s Web Encyclopedia Index
Compton’s Encyclopedia Online. “To inspire ambition, to stimulate the imagination, to provide the inquiring mind with accurate information told in an interesting style, and thus lead into broader fields of knowledge-such is the purpose of this work.”

Internet Scout Project
“Surf smarter, not longer. Let the Internet Scout Project show you the way to the best resources on the Internet--then you can choose what’s best for you. Librarians and educators do the filtering for you, reading hundreds of announcements each week looking for the online resources most valuable to the education community.” Generally, the quality of sites at the ISP is very high.

Library of Congress
This page links directly to the Library of Congress’ Bibliographies, Research Guides, and Finding Aids; but the whole Library of Congress site is a great research tool.

Merriam Webster Online
Search the Webster’s Dictionary or Thesaurus online, build your vocabulary at word of the day, play word games, and lots more available here.

Ready Reference Collection
At the Internet Public Library. While there is a lot of resources here to help you find information on the internet quickly and easily, the IPL maintains the same “freedom of expression” policy that the American Library Association has adopted, so use caution while searching some categories.

Research and Reference
Another helpful Library of Congress page, that allows access to the Library’s Research Information, Electronic Resources (online Internet Resource pages maintained by the LoC Reading Rooms, Reference Desk and Research Tools), more.

Search Engine Watch Top Search Engines
The Search Engine Watch stays up to date on all the statistics concerning search engines, how they work, who’s using them, how to submit sites to search engines, and more. This page lists the links to the top 20 search engines; I keep this one bookmark instead of 20 search engine bookmarks. Other useful information at Search Engine Watch includes Search Links and Web Searching Tips.

Virtual Reference Desk
From Purdue University. Maintains links to dictionaries, thesauri, acronyms, almanacs, maps, travel information, phone books, news archives, science data, and more.

Webster’s 1828 Dictionary
No other dictionary compares with the Webster’s 1828 dictionary. The English language has changed again and again and in many instances has become corrupt. “The American Dictionary of the English Language” is based upon God's written word, for Noah Webster used the Bible as the foundation for his definitions. This standard reference tool will greatly assist students of all ages in their studies.” The link takes you to the dictionary search page; you can also order the software from this site and install the dictionary on your own computer.

WWW Virtual Library
The WWW Virtual Library is continuously updated and has been since the web’s inception in 1994, and is “the oldest catalog of the web, started by Tim Berners-Lee, the creator of HTML and the web itself. Unlike commercial catalogs, it is run by a loose confederation of volunteers, who compile pages of key links for particular areas in which they are expert; even though it isn’t the biggest index of the web, the VL pages are widely recognised as being amongst the highest-quality guides to particular sections of the web.”
