Escondido Tutorial Service provides an education in the history, literature, and philosophy of Western Civilization rolled into one class, the Great Books Tutorials, beginning in the 8th grade. Yes, this option utilizes history textbooks, which we do not use for anything other than reference around here. Speilvogels texts are, however, the best we have found, and include extensive quotations from primary sources. Please realize that a childs education will be truncated by reading only a text rather than the real histories offered in CCHs History of Western Civilization Units, and realizing that, this option is offered for those parents who would like to perhaps use the texts as a base and add in the real books according to personal dictates.
Option 1: CCHs History of Western Civilization Units
In the dialectic stage, our children will again go through the history of Western Civilization, focusing on the whys and hows of history, and comparing the pivotal events and persons encountered with Biblical absolutes. A child who has not completed a study of the history or literature of Western Civilization in the grammar stage will need to utilize the recommendations from Preparation for a Great Books Study to become familiar with the facts of history, before beginning this option. This option was designed with the children that have completed CCHs history and literature units for the grammar stage in mind.
7th Grade: The Ancient and Classical World
8th Grade: The Medieval, Renaissance, and Reformed World
9th Grade: The American and Modern World

7th and 8th Grades: Preparation for a Great Books Study

Option 4: Spielvogels History of Western Civilization
These are history textbooks, which we do not use for anything other than reference around here. Spielvogels texts are, however, the best we have found, and include extensive quotations from primary sources. Please realize that a childs education will be truncated by reading only a text rather than the real histories offered in CCHs History of Western Civilization Units, and realizing that, this option is offered for those parents who would like to use the texts as a base and add in the real books according to personal dictates. Spielvogels Western Civilization is commonly used in college survey courses, and in AP European History classes in high school; however, since history is the story of what happened, when, where, and with whom; and, in this case, why and how, it is not outside the province of the dialectic stage but is its proper study. Be aware that this text series is written from a secular viewpoint. The beginning of history in chapter 1 gives its due to the evolutionary rise of civilizations, and care should be taken by the parent to engage their child in many discussions and refutations of the sometimes secular conclusions reached by the author. The Teachers Resources for each level (ancient and classical, medieval, renaissance, and reformed, and modern) will help the parent identify the secular conclusions.

Chapters 8 through 13, European Civilization in the Early Middle Ages through the Age of Reformation, deal with medieval, renaissance, and reformed history, and should be studied in the 8th grade.
