Latin Road to English Grammar
Latin Road to English Grammar teaches ecclesiastical Latin through deduction - grammar instruction - for late grammar stage (5th and 6th grade) and dialectic students, although rhetoric stage students and adults can also use the program with success. It is teacher intensive rather than independent study (but the curriculum gives the teacher with no knowledge of Latin all the help she needs.)
The full curriculum is contained in three volumes. The first volume introduces the noun cases and inflections for all five noun declensions, and teaches the first and second declension for both nouns and adjectives thoroughly; and introduces all four verb conjugations, teaching the first conjugation and the irrgular verb to be (sum) thoroughly, as well as introducing prepositional phrases. The second volume reviews the first, and teaches the third declension of nouns and adjectives thoroughly, as well as the second and third verb conjugations, more on prepositional phrases, and pronouns and demonstratives. The third volume reviews the first two, teaches the fourth and fifth noun and adjective declensions thoroughly, the fourth verb conjugation thoroughly, irregular verbs, idioms, verbals, clauses, and all the finer and more difficult points of Latin grammar. When a student has completed all three volumes, he is ready to read the classics in Latin.
Each volume comes with an extensive teachers manual, student text, pronunciation tape, and drill cards. The teachers manual is an integral part of the curriculum, and contains detailed and thorough teaching instructions for every concept introduced, and daily lesson plans, as well as all answer keys for the student text. The teaching instructions relate Latin to English grammar, although does not teach English grammar thoroughly as Homeschool Greek does. The teachers prior knowledge of English grammar will be helpful. Latin Road to English Grammar provides the most detailed teachers help of all the programs reviewed.
The student text contains all the student exercises, worksheets and tests. The student is required to keep a notebook, similar to The Writing Road to Reading, which helps them master vocabulary, pronunciation, definitions, grammar, cases/declensions (nouns), conjugations (verbs), and includes sections to keep text work, worksheets, word study (English words derived from Latin) and tests. The student notebook is the central core of the students work, besides memorization exercises for each lesson, translation practice and the tests, and is logically explained and illustrated in sequence in the teachers manual, so in that respect it differs from The Writing Road to Reading.
