Basics of Biblical Greek
Basics of Biblical Greek has been considered the best beginning Greek text for learning New Testament, or koine, Greek, and is widely used in seminaries. It is appropriate for motivated rhetoric stage students or adults with a working grasp of English grammar, just beginning their study of Greek. I would not recommend using this program with students younger than the rhetoric stage.
Basics of Biblical Greek teaches through deduction (grammar study) while giving the student translation practice from the Greek New Testament from the very beginning of the course (induction). This translation practice is an important feature of Dr. Mounces text, and the satisfaction of working through the New Testament on ones own, bit by bit with every lesson, is a powerful motivator. Each new lesson is furthermore introduced by a respected New Testament Greek scholar, writing about the nuances or the Biblical translations that the lessons grammar clarifies.
It contains in one text all the grammar necessary - nouns and verbs - to read the Greek New Testament upon completion. The Greek grammar is explained using English grammar, which the rhetoric stage student should already be familiar with. Unlike Homeschool Greek, the English grammar explanations are not complete and thorough for the student who has never studied English grammar, but will be helpful to the student by way of review who has already studied English. The vocabulary is limited, with special attention paid to that vocabulary which occurs most in the New Testament. Thus, with the knowledge of the few hundred words learned in this course, the student can read over 75% of the New Testament without resorting to a dictionary.
The clearly-written lessons proceed sequentially through the text, with the exercises and translation practice contained in a separate workbook. The answers to the workbook exercises are posted at the Teknia website, along with sample quizzes and more teacher resources. The text comes with a CD-Rom of sophisticated vocabulary drills and other learning helps for students with computer access. An added bonus with this program is that specifically for the independent study student, the complete Basics of Biblical Greek course, taught by Dr. Mounce from his own text, is available, reasonably priced, on audio tape.
